Air Brake Compressors
An air brake compressor is the heart of a heavy-duty truck's compressed-air system. Driven by the engine, it supplies the air pressure used by the service brakes, parking brakes and, on many vehicles, auxiliary equipment such as air suspension, transmission controls and cab accessories. When the compressor can no longer build and maintain pressure correctly, the entire air system is affected.
Ace Motor Parts supplies replacement air brake compressors for heavy-duty trucks, buses, vocational vehicles and selected industrial equipment. The listings below include Bendix, Haldex, Wabco and Cummins compressor part numbers found in our current product catalog. Each linked part number opens its individual product page in a new browser tab, allowing you to keep this reference page open while comparing specifications and cross-reference numbers.
The compressor family shown in the tables—such as TF-500, TF-501, TF-550, TF-700, TF-750, BA-921, BX-2150, EL-1300 or EL-1600—was identified from the product title and Shopify handle in the uploaded catalog export. Where the export includes general truck-manufacturer information, that information is shown in the application column. Because a manufacturer name alone does not establish exact fitment, the original compressor number, engine application, mounting pattern, drive arrangement, cylinder-head configuration and air connections should always be confirmed before ordering.
How an Air Brake Compressor Works
Most heavy-duty air brake compressors are engine-driven reciprocating pumps. As the compressor piston moves downward, filtered air enters the cylinder through the inlet valve. The upward stroke compresses that air and sends it through the discharge line toward the air dryer and reservoirs. A governor monitors system pressure and controls when the compressor loads and unloads.
During the loaded cycle, the compressor builds reservoir pressure. Once the system reaches the governor's cut-out setting, the unloading mechanism prevents the compressor from continuing to pump against a fully charged system. When pressure falls to the governor's cut-in setting, the compressor returns to its loaded cycle. Proper operation therefore depends not only on the compressor, but also on the governor, air dryer, discharge line, intake system, cooling system and the absence of major downstream air leaks.
Do you have a part number on the tag of your compressor but still cannot identify it or find it online? Use our Bendix Air Compressor Cross Reference to search for matching Bendix compressor numbers and replacement information.
Identifying the Correct Replacement Compressor
Two compressors from the same basic family can have different crankshafts, mounting flanges, drive gears, cylinder heads, water connections, oil connections or inlet and discharge-port locations. For that reason, selecting a replacement by appearance alone can lead to an incorrect order.
Begin with the OEM or remanufactured part number on the existing compressor. Also record the truck manufacturer, model, year, engine model and engine serial number. Photographs of the complete compressor are helpful, particularly clear views of the mounting flange, drive end, cylinder head, coolant fittings and air connections.
Ace Motor Parts would be happy to help you identify the correct compressor by part number for your application. Please feel free to call is or contact us on our Parts Inquiry page.

Common Air Brake Compressor Problems
A compressor is sometimes blamed for an air-system problem that actually begins elsewhere. Before replacing the unit, inspect the complete system and compare the symptoms with the truck manufacturer's service information.
Slow Air-Pressure Build-Up
A truck that takes too long to build air pressure may have worn compressor cylinders or piston rings, damaged inlet or discharge valves, a restricted intake, a leaking head gasket or an unloading mechanism that is not returning fully to the loaded position. However, substantial leaks in brake chambers, reservoir fittings, air lines, suspension components or accessories can create the same symptom. A restricted or carbon-filled discharge line can also reduce output and cause excessive compressor temperature.
Compressor Runs or Pumps Continuously
If the compressor appears to remain loaded after normal cut-out pressure is reached, check the governor, governor signal line and unloader mechanism. A large downstream air leak may prevent the system from reaching cut-out pressure at all. The air dryer purge valve and associated control lines should also be inspected before the compressor is condemned.
Excessive Oil in the Air System
Oil found in the reservoirs or air dryer may indicate worn compressor rings, cylinder wear, excessive crankcase pressure, a restricted intake or an incorrect oil-drain arrangement. A small amount of oil residue does not necessarily establish compressor failure. The amount collected, mileage, duty cycle and condition of the air dryer should all be considered. Replacing the compressor without correcting a restricted intake or excessive engine crankcase pressure can allow the problem to return.
Compressor Overheating
Overheating may result from restricted coolant flow on water-cooled units, low coolant, blocked passages, a carbon-restricted discharge line, excessive duty cycle or high discharge pressure. Inspect the coolant hoses and fittings, verify that the discharge line is the correct size and length, and check whether system leaks are forcing the compressor to remain loaded for long periods.
Unusual Noise, Knocking or Vibration
Mechanical noise can come from worn compressor bearings, piston or connecting-rod damage, a loose drive gear, damaged accessory-drive components or an incorrect mounting condition. Because an engine-drive failure can cause extensive damage, a compressor that develops sudden knocking, grinding or severe vibration should be inspected promptly.
Excessive Moisture in the Reservoirs
All compressors introduce some moisture into the air system. Excessive water accumulation is often related to the air dryer, purge cycle, desiccant condition, duty cycle or reservoir-draining practices rather than an internal compressor defect. Inspect the air dryer and verify that it purges properly before replacing the compressor solely because water is present.
Checks to Make Before Replacing the Compressor
- Measure reservoir build time according to the vehicle manufacturer's procedure.
- Inspect the complete air system for leaks, including the air dryer and auxiliary circuits.
- Verify governor cut-in and cut-out operation.
- Inspect the intake hose and filter for restriction or collapse.
- Check the discharge line for carbon buildup, damage, kinks or improper routing.
- Confirm adequate coolant flow on water-cooled compressors.
- Inspect oil-feed and drain passages where applicable.
- Check the compressor mounting, drive gear and accessory drive for looseness or damage.
- Confirm that excessive engine crankcase pressure is not contributing to oil carry-over.
When a compressor has suffered a major mechanical failure or produced heavy carbon and oil contamination, the discharge line, air dryer and reservoirs should be inspected and serviced as necessary. Installing a replacement compressor into a restricted or contaminated system can damage the new unit or reproduce the original symptoms.
Frequently Asked Questions About Air Brake Compressors
What information is needed to identify a compressor?
The most useful information includes the complete part number on the existing compressor, truck year and model, engine model, engine serial number and clear photographs. The mounting flange, drive end, cylinder head and port arrangement are especially important when the original tag is missing or difficult to read.
Can two compressors from the same model family interchange?
Not automatically. Two TF-500, TF-501, TF-550 or BA-921 compressors may differ in ways that prevent direct interchange. The complete part number and physical configuration should be compared rather than relying only on the family name.
Does slow air build always mean the compressor is worn out?
No. Air leaks, a defective governor, a malfunctioning unloader, a restricted intake or discharge line, and problems within the air dryer can all cause slow pressure build-up. Testing the entire system before replacement helps prevent unnecessary compressor work.
Where can I browse the complete compressor collection?
Browse the complete Ace Motor Parts selection of air brake compressors for heavy-duty trucks.
Important identification and service note: Product-family and application information on this page is provided as a general reference. Vehicle and engine configurations, production changes and previous repairs may affect fitment. Confirm the complete part number, engine application, mounting arrangement, drive configuration and connections before ordering. Air-brake diagnosis and repair should be performed using the appropriate vehicle and component service procedures.
