Ford Medium-Duty Hydraulic Brake Systems: Complete Guide 1968–1983
Ford medium-duty trucks from the late 1960s through the early 1980s were built for demanding commercial work. Models such as the Ford F-500, F-600, F-700, F-750, and F-800 carried heavy loads, made frequent stops, and often remained in service for decades. Their hydraulic brake systems were designed for this workload, but Ford used several different booster arrangements as truck design and braking technology evolved.
Depending on the year, model, master-cylinder design, axle configuration, and gross vehicle weight rating, a Ford truck might use a single frame-mounted Hydrovac, two Hydrovacs, a firewall-mounted vacuum booster, or a later Hydromax hydraulic brake system. Understanding these differences is important because components that look similar may have different brackets, hydraulic ports, vacuum connections, and internal specifications.
How Ford Hydraulic Brake Systems Changed
Many older Ford medium-duty trucks used a remote vacuum-assisted booster mounted along the frame. Commonly known as a Hydrovac, this unit worked with the master cylinder to increase hydraulic braking pressure without requiring excessive pedal effort.
Some Ford F-Series, B-Series school bus, C-Series cab-over, and L-Series trucks used one Hydrovac for the entire braking system. Other trucks used two boosters to assist separate portions of a split hydraulic system. Later Ford medium-duty models increasingly used firewall-mounted boosters or Hydromax systems with electrically powered hydraulic assistance.
These changes did not occur during one model year across every Ford truck line. Different systems overlapped, so a search such as “1970 Ford F600 Hydrovac” may produce several possibilities. The original component and brake-system configuration must still be identified before ordering a replacement.
What Is a Hydrovac Brake Booster?
A Hydrovac is a vacuum-assisted hydraulic brake booster. When the driver presses the brake pedal, pressure from the master cylinder activates the booster. Engine vacuum then helps move an internal diaphragm and hydraulic piston, increasing the pressure sent to the wheel cylinders.
Because a Hydrovac is remotely mounted, it can be positioned on the frame instead of directly behind the brake pedal. This made it useful on Ford medium-duty trucks where cab design, available space, and brake-line routing varied considerably.
A failing Hydrovac may cause a hard brake pedal, increased stopping effort, delayed brake application, or brakes that do not release properly. Similar symptoms can also be caused by deteriorated vacuum hoses, low engine vacuum, a restricted hydraulic line, an incorrect residual check valve, a failing master cylinder, or problems at the wheel brakes.
Single Hydrovac Systems
One of the best-known Ford applications is the 2510065 Bendix Hydrovac. This booster family is associated with several Ford medium-duty applications and may also be identified under Bendix numbers 2512138 and 2514918.
Catalog applications for the 2512138 number include certain 1976–1983 Ford F-600, F-700, and F-800 trucks equipped with a gas engine and single-system master cylinder. The same number also appears on selected Ford C-Series and L/LN-Series trucks using a single booster.
Bendix used different service and identification numbers over the years, which explains why the same basic booster may be found under more than one part number. The tag, mounting bracket, hydraulic connections, and physical dimensions should always be compared with the original unit.
Tandem and Split-System Hydrovacs
Heavier Ford trucks often used two Hydrovacs instead of one. These systems may be described as tandem or split hydraulic systems, with separate boosters assisting the front and rear brake circuits.
The 2512139 Hydrovac was used in several dual-booster Ford applications. Catalog listings include the front position on certain 1971–1979 Ford B-600, B-700, and B-750 school bus chassis and the rear position on selected 1971–1979 F-600 through F-750 trucks. It was also used on certain F-800 and L-Series split systems.
The 2512140 Bendix Hydrovac was frequently paired with the 2512139. The noticeable difference is that the 2512139 has a bracket on the vacuum section. Applications include the front position on certain 1971–1979 Ford F-600 through F-750 trucks and the rear position on comparable B-Series school bus chassis. It was also used on selected C-Series, L-Series, N-Series, and Ford M-450 and M-500 motorhome chassis.
Although the 2512139 and 2512140 belong to the same general booster family, they should not be assumed to be interchangeable. The mounting bracket, system position, port sizes, and hydraulic configuration must be considered.
Firewall Boosters and Master Cylinders
Not every Ford medium-duty truck used a frame-mounted Hydrovac. Certain 1968–1977 Ford F-500 through F-750 and N-Series trucks used a firewall-mounted Midland booster.
The C4084 firewall-mounted brake booster was used on these applications. Ford B-500 through B-700 school bus chassis from the same general period also used versions of this booster.
On trucks equipped with a single hydraulic system, the C4084 booster was commonly paired with the C3507SB Midland Master Cylinder. The C3507SB may also be identified by casting number 300455. Split-system trucks used a different master cylinder, so the original cylinder should be identified before replacement.


The Bendix HR-1 Hydraulic Relay Valve
The 065147 Bendix HR-1 Hydraulic Relay Valve is a heavy-duty hydraulic brake component used with Hydromax systems on a range of Ford commercial vehicles. Applications include certain Ford B-600 and B-700 school bus chassis, CF-600 and CF-700 trucks, and other medium-duty Ford platforms from the 1980s and 1990s.
Rather than operating as a vacuum booster, the HR-1 helps control hydraulic pressure within the power-assisted brake system. Because several valves and hydraulic components may look similar, the original Bendix number, casting details, and port arrangement are important when identifying a replacement.
Identifying the Correct Brake Component
Before ordering a booster, master cylinder, or hydraulic valve, record the truck’s year, model, engine type, gross vehicle weight rating, and whether it has a single or split hydraulic system. Also note any numbers stamped or riveted to the original component.
Clear photographs of the identification tag, mounting bracket, vacuum connection, and hydraulic ports can help distinguish between similar units. This is especially important on Ford F-600, F-700, and F-800 trucks that may have been modified or fitted with replacement components during their working lives.

Careful identification is the best way to locate the correct replacement and preserve the braking performance that Ford F-Series, B-Series, C-Series, L-Series, and motorhome chassis were designed to provide.
